ROGER WILLIAMS (c. 21 December 1603 – between 27 January and 15 March 1683) -- FOUNDER OF RHODE ISLAND AND THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN AMERICA (Providence, RI). He was the first statesman to implement the Separation of Church and State as a principle in law in any of the 13 American colonies. It was this principle of the Separation of Church and State (as a guarantee of Religious Liberty and freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, press freedom, etc.) that was later adopted into the Federal Constitution of the United States.
